Types of Games
For equTournaments and equRankings all games are divided into four groups. The group to which a particular game belongs is based on:
- whether it is an individual or a team game
- whether a 0:0 result has meaning in the game
Knowledge of the first point is used to choose the proper user interface and to determine whether the game supports one-on-one matches only or is able to support two-on-two matches as well.
Knowledge of the second point is used to select the proper computational model. Indeed in sports like tennis and volleyball a 0:0 result means that the match did not occur and so there is no information about the relative strengths of the opponents. But in sports like football and ice-hockey, a 0:0 result has meaning. It demonstrates that the strengths of the opposing teams are the same, so a different computational model should be used.
Games where a 0:0 result has meaning are called 0:0 relevant games, and those where a 0:0 result has no meaning are called 0:0 irrelevant games. Please go to: Main Menu > Games > Manager
Here you can define a new game, delete the game and edit game properties. At the bottom of the sports list you see the game iSoccer. It is in black colour because it was defined by a user. iSoccer stands for individual soccer and was defined by a user who likes to play soccer either one-on-one or two-on-two and who wants the ranking to represent the individual skills of the players.
If you would like to run a tournament for a game which is not on the list or for a game which is a variation of the existing game then you should define a new game by itself. Also you can send us the description of the game at info@tournamentdesign.com, so that we can help you.
The following is a demonstration of how to define a new game. Assume that you have to run a beach volleyball tournament for four players A,B,C and D. Beach volleyball is a team sport but the objective of your tournament is to rank the individual skills of players by playing two-on-two matches. You should begin by defining the new game - lets call it My Beach Volleyball - as an individual game. A 0:0 result has no meaning in this game, so it is a 0:0 irrelevant game. Please press the New button, and the New Game dialog will appear. Type My Beach Volleyball in the Name field and click an OK button.
Now a new game is on the list. We created a tournament Sunny Island for the game My Beach Volleyball. The type of tournament is ALPHA. We set this tournament to accept only doubles matches and as you can see, the individual skills of the participants are evaluated.
